Who was the first African American president?

Barack Obama's mother was a white American from Wichita Kansas and his father was a black African from Kenya. The president was born in Hawaii but spent much of his childhood in Indonesia. As a candidate Obama confronted the issue of race and said he hoped his election would break barriers for other Americans of color.
