Which president was the first to invite an African-American to dine at the White House?

Roseville invited the famous African American educator Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House on October 16, 1901. Washington had been born into slavery but managed through great hardship to attend Hampton Institute and later become Director of the Tuskegee Institute. He believe that education would give poor blacks an escape from sharecropping and debt.
