Who is often called the Father of the American navy?

John Paul Jones served as the first lieutenant aboard the first naval ship bought by the continental congress. He later captained a warship and battled a larger and better armed squadron of British ships. When the British demanded he surrender he said "I have not yet begun to fight" and went onto defeat them.
