Abraham Lincoln but the session was illegal and willing to use force to defend federal law and Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter in 1861 and forced its surrender he called on the state for 75,000 volunteers. The Civil War had the gun and it lasted until 1865. More than 620,000 soldiers on both sides died during the war.
