Which state was known as the Bear Flag Republic when the American settlers there decided to declare independence?

In June 1846, a small group of American settlers in California rebelled against the Mexican government and proclaimed California an independent republic. The flag they flew had a bear motif and thus was called the Bear Flag Republic.
