Who was the leading United States air ace in World War I?

Before becoming the leading United States air ace in World War I, Eddie Rickenbacker had been an internationally known race car driver. In 1917 he join the army. A pilot must shoot down five enemy aircraft to be counted as an ace. Rickenbacker shot down 22 planes and four balloons.
