What type of government does the United States have?

According to Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution the United States shall guarantee to every state in the Union a republican form of government. A republic is a state or nation in which the supreme power rests in all the citizens entitled to vote. This power is exercised by Representatives elected directly or indirectly by them, and responsible to them.
